Pet lovers often lament the damage playful pooches can cause in their gardens but with a little planning and training, humans and pets can harmoniously co-exist in a landscaped backyard. When designing a dog-friendly garden you need to factor in breed (think Chihuahua versus Great Dane), individual temperament (quiet and cuddly versus boisterous and active), and that some dogs just love to dig … and dig!

So what to include? Well, for starters, if you were a pet what might you like in your playground? Some lawn to roll around on, a paddling pool to splash about in, a leafy tree to snooze under? You’ll also need space to accommodate things like a kennel or dog run if you prefer to leave your dog outside when you go out for the day.
