The Patina Garden

When Gerrard Everson, the founder of Octopus Garden Design, purchased some imported French vintage 1950s concrete pots in 2017, they weren’t. Inspired by the hourglass shape of the pots, he developed a concept centred on three tall copper planters growing out of garden beds and overflowing with foliage. These would be surrounded by stone, timber, concrete, steel and lush planting. The custom-made metal Octopod planters were a highlight of the design which was, at heart, a celebration of materials and objects that improve with age. Rather than fight the elements, the designer believes we should embrace the imperfections and patinas that come with time, and in this way we can create gardens of character and beauty. The mix of materials included bluestone, used to create a wall, dressed and oiled railway sleeper timber posts, and charcoal concrete Turf Grid pavers. The cantilevered seat, a place to enjoy a morning coffee or to rest around a fire in the evening, was made of timber and steel. The planting was a combination of traditional and architectural species. won first place in the Landscaping Victoria Boutique Garden Awards.
