PVC Pieces on Public Display

Franco Mazzucchelli’s first private show in Asia was on show at the Hakgojae Gallery until Jan. 12. Mazzucchelli is an Italian postmodernist artist, whose (2010). Each item reveals a different colour, the artwork uses PVC pieces in the form of objects to decorate the indoors. Part of a serial project begun initially in 1971, the name of the work translates to ‘pure decoration’, and embodies the notion that industrial materials can serve as artistic ornaments. The show hall, which was located in the furthest end away from the main entrance, became a domineering space as it was filled with all of the PVC displays in variously conical, spiral and spherical shapes. Originally created to be displayed outdoors in Berlin, they had been transferred to their new locations to create the effect of a physical invasion. PVC materials pose a low risk of injury for visitors, and can be replicated to exact proportions in the case of damage to the works, which made them appropriate with which to realize Mazzucchelli’s intentions.
