ICON OF TIME: THE HEUER MONACO
Imagine 50 years ago, early morning on May 18th in 1969, you are Jo Siffert, opened the door of your Bahama yellow 911S, started the engine commencing a new journey you were looking forward for years.
Imagine you are burning for motorsports and had decided to become Formula 1’s first watch sponsor. Now, you chose the race of the races in Monaco to validate the new path, back then, a highly unusual advertising strategy.
The principality of Monaco is surrounded by la Côte d’Azur. A miraculous place where the southern chain of the European Alps hits the sea by creating picturesque villages, such as Cap d’Ail, Beausoleil and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Once a year the principality, smaller than Hyde Park, became the meeting point of the international jet set.
Those were the times with no speed limits. Freedom was only restricted by individual skill.
In the meantime, the Bahama 911 left the Italian border behind, exited the Corniche and weaved through narrow roads to a parking opposite the pits. Siffert looked at the blue Heuer Monaco on his wrist with a smile:
