DRIVER PROFILES Targa 2019
2013 MITSUBISHI EVO X RS
HAYDN MCKENZIE / MATT SAYERS
Racer Haydn McKenzie got behind the wheel as a teenager initially at club level but graduated to NZ Super GT and was eventually crowned NZ Super GT Champion for the 2002–2003 season. He’s had a varied career ever since, racing in NZV8s and Hard Enduro on motorbikes including competing and completing Red Bull Romaniacs 2017.
Haydn has also competed in off-road racing in both his Polaris and Can-Am, the latter finishing fourth in the Taupo 1000 held over two days.
Haydn’s first Targa event was the Targa Hawkes Bay 2018 in a Toyota GT86 finishing seventh overall and first in class.
Needing more horsepower Haydn purchased a Neil Allport–built 2013 Evo X and was leading Targa South Island until he crashed late on the second day, at the time of 90 seconds ahead of eventual winner Glen Inkster.
He did return after an overnight rebuild to finish and win more stages along the way, including the iconic Crown Range stage. Haydn won Targa Hawkes Bay 2019 outright and also Production 4WD.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Evo X is now having its standard gearbox replaced with a Hollinger for the upcoming event, which Haydn will tackle with codriver Matt Sayers.
