KEF’s Reference Series has a heritage back to 1973, when the Model 104 made its debut, among its innovations being the first speaker to which KEF had applied Raymond Cooke’s pioneering belief in the power of computer analysis. We’ll just repeat that date — 1973. By which time KEF already had a stash of HP computers performing digital Fourier analysis on its prototypes. It was worldleading loudspeaker design, with every speaker “subject to scrutiny at all stages of assembly, culminating in a final test comparison with a laboratory-maintained reference standard,” as the great Laurie Fincham, now at THX, put it. Hence the name — The Reference.
