Before the American inventor Daniel Halladay invented the self-regulating windpump in 1854, the only humans to enter the Great Karoo were hunters tracking migrating game. It’s a harsh world where no farm animal or shepherd can survive without assistance, and therefore, until the advent of the windpump, it was largely unpopulated.
