Peak perfect

If you haven’t yet visited the Drakensberg, you are missing out on some of the most beautiful scenery our country has to offer. As the mountain range winds its way from Limpopo down to the Eastern Cape, skirting the Lesotho border, its peaks seem to touch the sky. Among the mountains’ folds are a number of campsites where you can camp next to the heights, places including Dragon Peaks and Mountain Splendour. As you turn off in Winterton to get to the two resorts, Campagne Castle – at 3 377 m a mere 105 m lower than the highest peak, Thabana Ntlenyana – lies in front of you. After just 30 km, the R600 begins to twist its way into the folds of the mountain. Mountain Splendour’s turnoff is the first left, but we first carry on another 2,5 km to get to Dragon Peaks on the right.

Preaching to the choir

You reach the gate to Dragon Peaks gate about 400 m after the turnoff to the Drakensberg Boys Choir. A boom stops you at the gate; while waiting for the security guard to approach you with his paperwork, take note of the building to your left.
