Anton’s journey with motorhome renovations runs like a golden thread through his life. At the age of 23, he paid the deposit on a 1969 Volkswagen Kombi with his first salary as a teacher. The pupils named his Kombi the Ambulance as it was painted red and white. Early on, a bed was added and the motorhome seed was planted.
Anton’s next combi was a panel van, which he also converted to a motorhome. He used a modular concept to make packing easy. Then, Mitsubishi launched a motorhome and Anton persuaded his brother, Theo, to buy one with him.
They saw a business opportunity and later owned five vehicles they rented out to tourists. But things didn’t go so smoothly and they ended up selling all but one of the motorhomes. The one they kept may be reliable, but it’s also clumsy and slow – and a pain to drive when it’s windy, says Anton.
Its Achilles heel is that it’s not a 4x4 vehicle. So, you’re limited with the kind of destinations you can visit.
