When one envisages a highly experimental and pioneering residency in the field of contemporary practices, one hardly imagines a rural village in central India or the kiln building techniques from Africa. I often wonder what true artistic innovation is about. Is it the access to modern tools, consideration of the material at hand? Is it about perfecting technique, or creating a masterpiece that has never been seen before? Perhaps it is more about taking chances, foraying into the unknown with bold decisions, relying on new sources, means and collaborators. What if it is about being open to various approaches? Could one conceive of complete abandonment of plans or desired results and start afresh?
