MORRIS MINOR PROJECT PART 4: FRONT SUSPENSION REBUILD
Last issue we detailed the strip down of the offside front suspension, a task done to enable us to fit an adjusting plate behind the torsion bar lever and also to replace some time-expired suspension bushes. We had got as far as removing the torsion bar by knocking the wishbone back on its splines, but with the adjusting lever stuck fast to the other end.
We’ll pick the story back up with a tale showing how apparently simple jobs on a classic can spiral out of hand, and how the workshop manual can lead astray as easily as it can guide you. It all started in this case because the rubber bushes in the top trunnion on the OS front suspension looked a little suspect, and given how poor they were in the eye bolt, I figured I should replace them as a matter of course. So instead of buying individual bushes, I bought a polyurethane kit for the whole car.
The top of the king pin/stub axle assembly screws into a top trunnion, and it was the bushes in this that I wanted to replace. The damper arm pivot bolt goes through these bushes, protruding forwards and into a tapered housing on the end of the damper arm where it is secured with a castellated nut and split pin.
