Jazz guru Ruth on ‘studio exhaustion’

I’ve been playing with a swing jazz band for many years now. Recently we’ve played a lot of gigs in a row, completed a new record, and played a residency in a club in central London in the UK a few times, and it feels as if our band’s sound has evolved immensely. I’ve always enjoyed playing swing jazz, but I’m by no means an expert, and have come to it pretty much unaware of what its stylistic rules are.

As I’ve discussed previously, I’m into rhythm-section playing, and the intricacy and detail that comes with it. In this band the rhythm section is the amazing rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie, and me on double bass.
