Some of the first high heels are seen in etchings of Egyptian religious ceremonies, leading academics to surmise the lofty shoe was originally an attempt at being closer to the heavens and godliness. Greek actors also adopted platforms, known as ‘kothorni’, to indicate the social class of their characters, long before modern science proved people associate height with power.

1400s

Towering outer shoes called ‘chopines’ were worn by women to both protect and show off extra lengths of decadent dress. They
