WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE… to be a designer
I eventually ended up excavating a Hellenistic site on the Euphrates river in Syria near Aleppo over a number of seasons with a team from the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Melbourne. Finding domestic and ceremonial pieces gave a social and design context to the lives and values of the people who were, in effect, our ancestors. The next transition occurred when I realised I enjoyed studying the profiles and construction of the ceramic shards we uncovered daily, not to mention the fact I really wanted to create some that were intact!
