IN ADELAIDE’S HISTORIC EAST END, cosmopolitan Rundle Street darts off into concealed laneways that are emerging as hotbeds of urban life. One trio, Vardon Avenue, Ebenezer Place and Vaughan Place, are art-splashed alleys where numerous bars, boutiques and cafes are finding their slots among heritage façades. “The biggest turning point was the granting of the small bar licence in 2013,” says Oliver Brown of whiskey bar, Nola. “The first few started up in 2014. My first venue was through one of those affordable licences. I had a pop-up bar and fell in love with the East End.”
