Spectacular Islands of Southeast Asia

INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, AND BRUNEI

Borneo

Borneo is an island located in the extreme southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third-largest island in the world, after Greenland and New Guinea. It lies southeast of the Malay Peninsula in the Greater Sunda Islands group of the Malay Archipelago, bounded by the South China Sea to the northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea to the east, and the Java Sea to the south.

The island is divided into three parts, administered by separate countries: Brunei, occupying two small portions of the northwestern coast; East Malaysia, occupying the northern third of the island; and Indonesia, occupying the central and southern regions, referred to as East Kalimantan.

Derawan Island

Derawan Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies off the coast of Kalimantan. It is part of its own small archipelago and known as one of the best places to dive in and around Kalimantan – the waters here are teeming with marine life. It is home to blue ring octopuses, scorpionfish, and seahorses.

Derawan Island also features a famous rock, the “Blue Trigger Wall”, which is 18 metres long and sits at 10 metres below the surface of the water.
