Kelly Spencer

You can barely throw a paint can in Wellington without hitting Kelly Spencer’s work. The 35-year-old has illustrated everything from entrance signs to 6m-high walls, her looping script wrapping around letters and figures, such as whales and birds.

The Gisborne-born artist has scaled scaffolds from Auckland to Christchurch and describes her colourful work across both type and illustration as “rounded, smooth and clean” and, increasingly, with an environmental message.

“I want my art to show that we need to start taking care of this planet,” says Spencer. That includes curating
