Welcome to our Best of 2018 special. To make it happen we sought a balance between locally designed and international, between the subtle and the flamboyant, and between the practical and the fantastical.

In it, we attempt to capture a snapshot of the most memorable designs that were either created or came to popular attention during the year.

We reached out to most of our favourite designers and retailers in the country to seek their nominations for the best products and the results were mind-boggling.

We would need, minimum, twice the space we have here to do justice to the array of excellent craft currently being produced in or imported into New Zealand… a peculiarity that makes our jobs easier and harder at the same time!

We did look internationally at some of our favourite fairs and niche artisans, we explored objects that were being revitalised from previous eras, and we uncovered environmentally conscious materials and
