The gardens at Versailles are a time capsule. They were built in the 17th century under every pretense of what a great garden should be, and they’re carefully maintained to depict that part of horticultural and world history. And although this represents a kind of horticulture that is no longer practical or applicable to the needs of our times, it would be utterly unthinkable to rip out the sculpted allées, bulldoze the l’Orangery and turn Piet Oudolf loose upon it.
But the world needs the gardensview on how to achieve a respectful yet progressive balance.
