What could be better than a holiday where you get to pick up a new Beetle, Bus, Karmann Ghia or even a 411 soon after landing and then drive it to your heart’s content around Europe? Well, that was what Volkswagen offered from the 1950s to the 1970s, courtesy of its Tourist Delivery programme. Of course, it wasn’t quite as simple as all that – there were a few caveats. Such as having to actually buy the vehicle. Oh, and have it shipped back to your home country afterwards. Which would have to be somewhere like the United States, Canada or New Zealand. Still, beats a Fiat hire car any day….
