Up and Down

While this year’s March auctions kicked off with a bang, results were markedly less outstanding in the ensuing months. Auction houses seem to be responding by looking closely at what has worked in recent years, including a mix of big-name modern artists with those newly in demand.

Christie’s New York will hold a South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale on September 12 as part of its biannual Asian Art Week. The historically strong sale, which raked in USD 10.2 million this March, features Indian artist Akbar Padamsee’s (1959) as its cover lot for the fall edition. With estimates between USD 800,000 and 1.2 million, the panoramic painting of the Mumbai skyline is part of Padamsee’s seminal “Gray” series (1959–60). In (1959), for USD 1.3 million.
