THAO-NGUYEN PHAN: VOYAGES DE RHODES

In her book (2018), a part of her multimedia project “Poetic Amnesia” (2014–), Thao-Nguyen Phan tackles Vietnam’s cultural losses over the course of its modernization. Published by the NTU?, is largely credited to French Jesuit missionary Alexandre de Rhodes, who in the 17th century adapted the Latin alphabet, first brought to Vietnam’s shores by other European missionaries, by adding flourishes indicating tone—critical to expressing meaning in Vietnamese.
