a Chong-Hyun, among the pioneers of the Korean Dansaekhwa (“monochrome painting”) movement, has been working exclusively on his iconic, extremely laborintensive and formally complex “Conjunction” paintings since the 1970s, and has never made a sketch or plan for any of them. “It’s more fun that way,” he told me in Busan, where he had traveled to open his solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery’s coastal outpost.
