A woman teeters. Her body, like the carving of the winged demi-god behind her, has been pierced several times. This scene from Afifa Aleiby’s painting (1991) stems from the work’s titular conflict, and (2009–10), photos of Iraqi citizens covering their faces with portraits of Saddam Hussein, while the late Nuha Al-Radi will be represented by her assemblage (1995).
