In June 2017 I had the fortunate task of interviewing Toni Street, over cocktails in Fiji, for a NEXT story on work/life balance. While her husband for more family time, and how relieved she was that her health was back on track, after a tough time with her autoimmune disease. Then she revealed that she still really, really wanted baby number three – although doing so would be incredibly risky. “What about surrogacy?” I asked, more to tick the journalistic box than out of any expectation that was on the cards. Surrogacy, to me, seemed like something a Kardashian did. “That has been put on the table,” she replied casually. Months later, Toni told me she was caught off-guard by my question, because the week before she’d been at the Fertility Associates office having those first conversations about surrogacy that would eventually bring her baby Lachie.
