Kowas Kudu
FROM the time I picked up a shooting magazine as a kid, those huge spiral horns made an impression on me. To spot-and-stalk a mature free-range Kudu bull had risen to ‘number one’ on my wish-list! Finally, after some serious years of saving and research, I was bound for the Dark Continent to stalk the ‘Grey Ghost of Africa’ myself. Along with my wife Nikki, and good friends and Africa veterans Mark and Lauren Rohde, we chose to hunt with the Strauss family at Kowas Adventure Safaris in southern Namibia (pronounced Kovas). Arrival admin’ and travel sorted, we finally we stood around the lapa at Kowas lodge, cold beer in hand, revelling in anticipation as the flames danced over camelthorn deadwood. Tomorrow our 10-day hunt would commence!
A disturbed sleep was relieved by hearing red-billed Francolins heralding the new day. Following breakfast, we loaded our rifles and packs into the Landcruiser ‘bakkie’ and headed off to the range for an accuracy check and practice shooting over sticks.
