Meeting a Famous Tribal-Class Destroyer in Malta HMS Maori
There is a place in the Mediterranean Sea that offers World War II wrecks only a few minutes from its coasts. This place is the Island of Malta. Intense bombings sank many ships around there during the war and especially in 1942. The most accessible and interesting one is the wreck of the HMS Maori. Although she is broken down, she is one of the most famous dive sites in Malta with many species of fish and invertebrates living around her.
Named after the indigenous Mãori people of New Zealand because Mrs. Jordan, who launched her on the 2nd of September, 1937, was the wife of New Zealand High Commissioner William Jordan, the HMS was a Tribal-class destroyer laid down by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Limited, at Govan in Scotland on June 6th, 1936.
