Often, there is a perception that if you want to grow your own food you need a large rural lifestyle block. Yet many cultures have no choice but to grow a great deal of their food in a small backyard.

Tricia Thompson is a passionate advocate of backyard food gardens. She works full time, half the week teaching student midwives and the other half doing practical midwifery work – yet also finds time for her garden. She amply demonstrates that a productive home garden needn’t be large, and even in the depths of winter it still supplies a large proportion of her daily food.
