In the final chapter of his 1990 book about the building of the coastal railway between Christchurch and Picton, author Rob Merrifield wrote: “The geology of this actively rising region of mountains together with the weather and the close proximity of long lengths of the railway to the sea remain risks which must be assessed and guarded against where possible.”
