reader’s letter this week gave me a dose of the guilts. Kelly Eng wrote how she recently returned a book to her library she had taken out 31 Linda Smith must have been the bad Linda Smith who effectively stole a book! Reading Kelly’s letter made me feel less alone. But then when I googled the topic of late return of library books, I felt even better. The Guinness World Record for the most overdue library book is held by Robert Walpole of England, who borrowed a book from his college in 1668. It found its way back 288 years later. Fortunately, like Kelly’s kindly librarian, no fine was imposed!
