Maybe more than any other nation Scotland knew how to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory. How they lost to Wales in 2010 will remain a source of angst for years to come.
They were leading their Six Nations encounter 24-14 with three minutes remaining. Yet instead of claiming their first victory in Cardiff since 2002, they were in a state of shock wondering how they had managed to lose 31-24.
Injuries, fatigue and pressure left them with players out of position and one man – hooker Scott Lawson – in the sin-bin.
They were vulnerable and Wales managed to score in the 77th minute when Leigh Halfpenny was worked free on the right wing and Stephen Jones struck a glorious conversion. Still – even then… But Wales were able to collect the re-start and hold the ball long enough for Lee Byrne to chip ahead.
Referee George Clancy said he was tripped by Phil Godman and awarded a penalty and yellow card to the Scots defender. It was a harsh call but Clancy wasn’t going to change his mind. Welsh skipper Ryan Jones asked Stephen Jones to go for goal – which he successfully did to level the scores. “I put
