The All Blacks lost the Bledisloe Cup in 1998 and had battled for five years to win it back with no success.

They didn’t have the quality to beat a great Wallabies side twice in a season, until 2003.

The first game in Sydney was a one-way try-fest for the All Blacks. They knew the return game at Eden Park – the last before the World Cup – would see the Wallabies raise their standards and scrap to the death to hold the trophy.
