WORLD CUP YEAR always brings into sharp focus the challenges facing the smaller rugby nations, and most pertinent to us in New Zealand, those in the South Pacific.
Samoa’s heroic, captivating first tournament in 1991, Fiji’s epic battles with France in 1987 and 1999 and the sight of a beaming Sona Taumalolo inviting the French in for one more scrum late in their shock win at Eden Park in 2011.
Moments to remember, but moments that remind us of the raw deal those countries have had over the years.
