George's Marvellous Medicine

George Bridge has a few clear memories of the last World Cup. He was watching events in England from his home in Christchurch, freshly minted as it were as he had been part of the New Zealand Under 20 team that had won the Junior World Championship a few months earlier.

He remembers the final and the last try of the game scored in the dying minutes by Beauden Barrett.

But shining brighter in his mind are the events of the quarter-final and specifically the second of three tries scored by Julian Savea in the crushing victory against France.

That first try came after Dan Carter hoisted a high kick that curiously saw Ben Smith and French No 8 Louis Picamoles as the only two men contesting it in the middle of the field.

Somehow, incredibly, Smith not only covered the ground to get to the pitch of the ball, but he outjumped the giant Frenchman, took a clean catch, bounced to his feet and managed to deliver a quick recycle.

The ball was shifted left where Savea famously bumped
