Many vegetables such as tomatoes, bushbeans and cucumbers need regular tying up to stakes or structures to help keep them tidy. By doing so, you increase airflow through the plants and help reduce pests and diseases. Instead of buying soft ties, make your own from old sheets, t-shirts or other clothing cut into strips, approximately 25–30 millimetres wide. Besides protecting your vegetables from being damaged from tying with harsher material, this repurposes items that aren’t suitable for passing on to others to use, and a garden with homemade
