E3 2018 encompassed the progress women and marginalised groups have made in the gaming community, while still emphasising that more still needs to be done. AAA publishers are finally taking note of fans’ desire for rich female protagonists, creating more engaging blockbuster stories centred around playable female characters with a variety of personalities. Ubisoft Quebec’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and The Coalition’s Gears of War 5, which were both announced at this year’s show, are changing the face of notoriously male-dominated franchises with women front and center in the marketing collateral.
