If you had to buy just one…
If you’re a Jeff Beck newbie, and you want to buy just album to get your feet damp, it should probably. Then, a few seconds after you do that, grab the DVD or Blu-ray of the same show. As I’ve been telling friends and random strangers for the past 11 years, the album/ DVD gives you everything you need — in one tidy package (OK, tidy packages) — to hear and see what modern-era Beck is all about. is super intimate, so you can’t help but feel as though you’re in a large studio or a very small club with Beck and his deliriously talented band (bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, keyboardist Jason Rebello and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta). The sound quality mops the floor with Beck's previous (and subsequent) live albums. And then there’s the set list, a brilliant hodgepodge of “hits,” shredders, vintage stuff, recent stuff, “Brush with the Blues,” “Led Boots,” “Space Boogie” and — of course — Beck’s Grammy-winning version of “A Day in the Life.” The DVD sports a few extras, including “People Get Ready” with Joss Stone and two tunes with Eric Clapton. To sum up, is simply Beck playing his best songs as well as he's ever played them. Why start anywhere else?
