Ride Like a Girl

It’d be tempting to describe Kiwi acting legend Sam Neill as the standout of this film about Aussie jockey Michelle Payne (a gutsy Teresa Palmer), the first woman to ride a Melbourne Cup winner, but he is not. That honour goes to Payne’s brother Stevie, the strapper of tackles some of the grittiest issues in racing, including injury risks and sexism against women, while staying true to the feel-good essence of a triumph-over-adversity tale. I went along with a bloke and mate; he cried like a girl.
