I’ll admit it, sometimes I get all cranky-old-hippy about all the rules attached to some contemporary trail racing events. Then just as I start to climb up on my soapbox, a shiny piece of racing bling catches my eye and I remember that all those new life experiences and wonderful stories of challenges conquered have been made possible because of one fundamental shift on the trail running scene – the creation of the mandatory gear list.
