West is best

Inspector Mel Aitken has green fingers. When she is not running or working, Aitken gets a great deal of satisfaction from gardening and mowing lawns. “I think it’s an OCD trait of mine, but there is nothing better than getting that sense of satisfaction when the grounds are looking immaculate, with straight lines and neatly trimmed edges – and no daisies,” Aitken laughs.

Free time and rest days are a rarity for Aitken, who, besides clocking up approximately 115–140km of running a week, is kept busy working for the New Zealand Police in the West Coast region of the South Island.
