IT TAKES TWO…
Running a successful events company is a privileged position. You essentially get to do what you love as a job. The flipside of this is that, like any job, sometimes it must become a grind. Not all the time, but I would wager that over time there would be circumstances where you struggle with motivation. The danger of this ennui is you can (again like any job) start to phone it in, whereby an event becomes an event becomes an event.
When I spoke to Aaron Carter, the head of Total Sport, about the tenth year of The Partners Life DUAL, I found no trace of someone going through the motions. Carter was excited about the event, describing the marathon and half marathon course in great detail, and sounding rightfully proud of Total Sport’s contribution of about $400,000 to the Motutapu Restoration Trust over the last ten years, and the fact that, unlike some events with a ten-year history, the DUAL goes from strength to strength.
