"And I’ve heard from João that you don’t ever quit,” Jan said with a nervous laugh as we waited in the early morning darkness.
‘“Oh man, what a way to put the pressure on,” I joked apprehensively in return, secretly proud that my reputation proceeded me.
“I’ve never had a DNF and I never want to. I just keep going until they tell me to stop,” I continued, silently hoping I could somehow maintain my record in the coming day.
The bus left for Dion at 3.18am, there was no roll call or ticket checking.
If you weren’t there, you weren’t going. I liked the self-sufficiency of it all. It was going to be a long day depending only on one person. If you were committed, you would be there.
We arrived at the ruins of Dion and milled around in the darkness. We 37 starters could only wait and wonder what was ahead of us.
