Suffering from severe asthma as a youngster, Jason Reid was 15 years old before he could run around his school oval – but by 17, he was running half marathons.
He joined New Brighton Club where cross country running was fierce and one of New Zealand’s best with national representatives such as Pete Renner, Tom Birnie, Don Greig and Mal Radcliffe, Reid says.
“I always remember watching the Pier50 (mile) race start at New Brighton Mall each year and I would marvel at the runners and I was determined I would be among them.
