The Apsley Gorge is a spectacular and sudden, deep chasm cut into the rolling farmlands of New England, halfway between Tamworth and Port Macquarie in NSW. The gorge is formed immediately as the Apsley River encounters a slanting slate rock band and dives 60 metres into the depths below, shortly followed by another impressive 60-metre waterfall into a cauldron formed by towering slate cliffs. The river continues to flow through the precipitous gorge for 50 kilometres towards the Tasman Sea.
