THE NAZIS LEFT A TOXIC LEGACY in the trees of Arctic Norway.
Desperate to conceal their massive battleship Tirpitz from unrelenting Allied search-and-destroy missions, the Germans moved the ship from fjord to fjord and sometimes shrouded it in a chemical fog.
Researchers have found nearby trees badly damaged by the smoke screen of chlorosulfuric acid the ship produced. Claudia Hartl, a scientist from Germany’s Johannes Gutenberg University, made the discovery after examining trees at Kåfjord village
