Gentle waves lap the side of the Siem Reap as we drop anchor in Vinh Long, Vietnam. It’s sunrise on the Mekong Delta and after two days spent surrounded by the markets, motorbikes and mayhem of Ho Chi Minh City, it’s completely silent save for the hum of a motorised sampan gliding past my cabin window. Onboard, a solitary fisherman deftly balances a fishing trap in one hand and a cellphone in the other. His ability to juggle both is remarkable and, as I soon discover, mirrors daily life across the entire region.
