STEELY DAN REELIN’ IN THE YEARS

Featuring on Steely Dan’s 1972 debut album Can’t Buy A Thrill, Reelin’ In The Years includes twin-lead duties from band members Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter and Denny Dias. The legendary solos, however, much lauded by the likes of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, were handled by session ace Elliott Randall, and recorded in one take.

The choruses and solos are based around G and A chords, with A being the root note. We’ll spare you the theory, suffice to say the song is in A Mixolydian – a bright, bluesy scale which is just the job for Randall’s jazz-tinged fusion chops. This jazzy approach is also applied in the verses which include a bevy of cool-sounding chromatic passing chords.
