When it comes to motorsport, Porsche is used to winning. Its incredible record on the world’s toughest race tracks and rally stages are evidence of that, but it would be the latter where the 911 first demonstrated its competitive abilities. There are fewer motorsport disciplines tougher than rallying, a sport that tests both car and driver to their very limits, and by the same token no events are tougher than the Safari. Success here requires not just total commitment, but a car that can soak up the strongest of punishments, a combination that should really have suited the 911 to a tee.
