With an old 911 and a diesel Golf sharing my garage, I’m never going to be chosen as poster-boy for any environmental pressure groups. But Greta Thunberg has been successful in making even me, and probably many others, shift a little uncomfortably in our seats while reflecting on our lifestyles, and especially our motoring choices. With phrases like ‘carbon-neutral’ and ‘sustainable future’ now part of the everyday conversation, we felt it was time to look at what could be the future for our 911s of the past. The future of motoring is said to lay in the hands of battery technology, so can this method of ultra-low carbon efficiency be retro-fitted to your classic 911?
There is a reason why air-cooled 911s face much less stringent MOT emissions tests than their later cousins, and that is because they simply couldn’t pass the current test. This was part of the motivation for Porsche introducing water-cooled engines in the 996. Some classic 911 owners though are taking a hard look at their cars’ emissions, and searching for solutions.
