Sometimes the distance between ‘want’ and ‘need’ can be significant. Take television standards, for example. When Full HD sets first arrived, their 1920x1080 screens represented a big improvement in picture quality over standard definition and were supported by a reasonable amount of Full HD content. Consumers were falling over themselves to upgrade.
